Staying focused on one thing at a time is a hard task. Once I start into something that I’m excited about, I see a bunch of stuff that I want to do. Then, I’m in a hurry to start doing them. The next thing that happens is I let myself get overwhelmed by trying to do too much. So, what’s next?
Nothing gets done. Do you ever do that?
For instance, I’m trying to stay focused on one aspect of living a healthy life at a time. A simply holistic life is what I’m striving for. However, I know it can’t all be accomplished at once.
As I mentioned in my first post, my initial focus will be on water intake. Because water is the elixir of life and critical to healthy body function, this seems like a wonderful place to begin.
To begin, I figured if I could drink at least four glasses of water a day, then I’m doing well. Since I don’t hardly drink plain water at all, any is better than none. If I find, I can’t do four, then I’ll back up to two until I can begin to set a habit.
Habit Forming & Staying Focused
I’ll elaborate a bit more in my next article, but, I’ve been reading a lot about habit forming. How to make new and break old habits. Some folks think you can just do anything you want to set your mind to. However, I don’t think it’s quite that easy.
I’m a well-educated individual and find there is much evidence to support the discussions and practices of habit forming as a way of staying focused on the goal. Little incremental changes is the way to succeed and that’s how you form habits.
So, I continue to focus on the goal of drinking a gallon of water per day.
My Water Intake Journey
My starting point on this water journey is pretty much zero. I know it’s hard to believe that someone drinks absolutely no water, but I really don’t. Or I should say, I haven’t been drinking any at all not for a very long time.
As a nurse, I know that’s terrible. I consume coffee, tea, and diet coke. Occassionally, I’ll have a glass or few sips of flavored water, but I always give that up in favor of flavor. Or so that’s what I tell myself.
People say that water has no flavor. That may be true, but I know that one can be trained to crave water much the same as we crave sodas, candy, etc.
So, this first step of my journey to health is staying focused on the goal of water intake and its benefits. Today was decent. I did get in about 32 oz of flavored kiwi water. That’s not yet the plain clear stuff, but it’s progress.
Tomorrow and Next Steps
I’ll be back tomorrow to update you on my progress. I’m hoping by setting a habit of sharing my journey with you, that you will eventually hold me accountable as well.
Next steps are to maintain the gain of at least 32 oz of water tomorrow. If I can do more, that’s awesome. If not, that’s okay too. My first habit is a minimum of 32 oz per day.
Then, we’ll move on from there. Thanks for joining me today and see you soon.
